Your vehicle will get rusty when the iron components come in contact with moisture.

How long do Car Batteries last?

Your Car Battery won't last forever, no matter how well you take care of it. On average, Car Batteries can last up to 5 years.

But certain conditions can affect the lifespan of your Battery. For example, keeping your vehicle in storage for a long time or running appliances while the car is idle.

How can I make my Battery last as long as possible?

To make sure your Battery makes it to 5 years, you can take the following steps:

Test Your Battery Routinely Having your Battery tested will help you determine when it needs replacing. When it reaches around 3 years old, consider having it tested. Some good times are during oil changes and at the end of each season.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is a valuable fluid that is often overlooked. It helps your car stop, prevents rust, and lubricates the moving parts in the braking system.

When you push on your brakes, the Brake Fluid travels through the brake lines to the caliper pistons. Then, the pistons apply force to your brake pads and rotors and the car slows down. A Trapped Foreign Object

Brakes can also squeak if there is an object such as a rock or stick lodged somewhere in your Braking System. If this is the case, you may even hear squeaking without pressing the Brakes. Be sure to have the Brakes examined before it ruins your Rotors.

How often should I get my Brakes worked on?

There are too many variables in the lifespan of your brakes to give an accurate timeframe. Highway driving, heavy braking, and more all affect the condition of your Brakes.

If the Lug Nut Fits! - What a Missing Lug Nut Will Cost You

Have you been paying attention to your lug nuts? Chances are, you haven't been looking for all the right things. All of your lug nuts may be there... but how many of them are the correct ones?

What would happen if I had a loose lug nut

A lug nut (also called a wheel nut) holds the wheel onto the car. Depending on the type of vehicle, you can have between four and six lug nuts per wheel. Some cars have loose wheel nut indicators, so you know to fix the lug nut before it falls off. Others do not have this sensor, so it's good to inspect the lug nuts regularly to check for loose ones. If you notice a loose lug nut, you should have it tightened as soon as possible.

What would happen if I was missing a lug nut?

A car with a missing lug nut is "okay" to drive for a bit, but it will become dangerous. If you lost a lug nut, extra pressure is being put on the remaining lug nuts, causing them to wear out faster.

If this happens, you may also notice a wobbly ride. That uneven distribution of pressure will make your car shake while you drive.

A missing lug nut on a wheel means the wheel bearings must hold more pressure, which can cause them to wear early. Repairing wheel bearings is more troublesome than replacing a lug nut. So if you notice one missing, replace it as soon as possible.

What would happen if my lug nuts were the wrong size?

Not all lug nuts are the same!

See those inner oval-shaped holes in this wheel hub? At one point, those ovals were perfect circles. Using the wrong-shaped lug nuts warped this hub to irreversible condition.

If you are using the wrong kind of lug nut, it will damage your wheels and/or axles and put you in danger.

The lug nuts will also start to strip and smooth out like the one in this photo. If ignored, they could fall out.
Over time, this can wear down the other lug nuts on the wheel.

As discussed above, a wheel that is missing a lug nut is not safe to drive.

Filling Your Tires with Air

At some point, every driver has to fill their tires with air. Many gas stations offer an air pump station. Some are even free!
You can find how much air to put in your tires in your owner's manual or on the sticker on your door.

Tire Rotation and Alignment

A tire rotation is when a technician switches your tires in a specific pattern to even out the wear. Your vehicle needs a tire rotation every 3 to 5 months.
A lot of car owners will have their tire rotation done at the same visit as their oil change.
A wheel alignment checks and adjusts the wheel's camber, caster, and toe.

Camber

Camber refers to the inward and outward tilt of the tire. It affects tire wear and is very important in cornering and straight-line stability.

Caster

Each tire's caster affects the vehicle's steering and handling. The higher or more positive the caster, the more stable the vehicle is. Lower or negative caster means less responsive handling.

Toe

Toe is the easiest to fall out of alignment. When the toe is at its prime angle, there is less friction on the tires as you drive. When the toe is out of alignment, either toe-in or toe-out, they'll scrape the road.

How Do I Know If I Need New Tires?

If you're wondering whether it's time to change your tires, keep the following factors in mind:

The Age of the Tires

Generally, tires last for about 6 years. But if your tires are in bad condition earlier on, don't try to wait until they are 6 years old!

The Tire Tread

If the tread on your tires becomes smooth and bare, driving in the rain and snow will become dangerous.

Exposure to Weather

Long exposure to the sun will warp the rubber and change the tire's structure. Constant changes from hot to cold temperatures will also wear your tires out faster. Keep an eye out for cracks, chips, or flaking.

Plugging a Tire

A tire plug is a long, sticky, and expandable tube-like object that inserts into the puncture of a tire.

Is a Tire Plug a Permanent Fix?

Plugging a tire is not a permanent fix. And you should never plug the same tire twice. Otherwise, you risk a high chance of your tire blowing out.

A tire plug is not meant to support a tire for a long period of time. Eventually, it will fail and trap air between the layers of the tread. This will separate and ruin the tread layers, so you'll end up buying a new tire anyway.

How Long Does a Tire Plug Last?

It depends on the size of the puncture and how you install the plug. Tire plugs help you drive safely to the closest tire or automotive repair shop. Replace the tire as soon as possible.

Plugs vs. Patches

A tire patch is a flat reinforcement piece with a long metal stick that you pull out from the inside of the tire.

Why is My Transmission Fluid...?

When your transmission fluid changes colors, it's trying to tell you something. But what does each color mean?

Red

Clear, red transmission fluid will work the best. This color means the transmission fluid isn't contaminated or dirty. It will protect the transmission and help in shifting gears.

Pink

Your transmission fluid should never be pink. As stated above, red transmission fluid is clean and new. The colors can look similar, but be sure to look carefully. Pink fluid means water or coolant has mixed with the transmission fluid. The diluted fluid will cause damage to the transmission.

If your vehicle is leaking pink fluid, bring it to an auto repair shop as soon as possible.

Orange or Light Brown

If your transmission fluid is orange, it is in okay condition but is getting old. As long as it is still transparent, you don't need to rush to change it. But be sure you change it before it turns darker brown or thick.

Brown or Dark Brown

Around 30,000 miles, your transmission fluid will turn brown. An opaque, brown transmission fluid means it is filling with oxygen and will stop working.

If your transmission fluid becomes brown or opaque, have it changed as soon as possible.
